My Male Perspective Into The Canadian Nursing Career
I got into nursing not knowing. Everyone told me that it is a great field, a lot of demand, well paying. Those were all good and well, but I was more concerned about the job itself. Would nursing be right for me?
Could I, as a male who has always valued physical strength and conditioning see myself as a nurse? I did not know. For a little while, I was a personal trainer. During this time, I experienced a great deal of satisfaction. Also, I was able to help individuals reach their health and fitness goals.
Leap of faith
After leaving that field, I took the leap of faith and jumped into nursing. I joined nursing I wanted to be in a field where I could get a similar rewarding feeling. During my two years of studying practical nursing, I had the pleasure of working with likeminded individuals who truly care about helping others. I have been able to form very strong friendships and am grateful for them.
For the past two years, I have been working in a hospital medicine unit. I can confidently say that although nursing may not build physical strength as well as other careers, it does build strength, courage, and discipline. It is also very rewarding. I feel a true sense of gratitude when patients show their appreciation for the care that I provide. Although it can be stressful (as with most careers), it is most definitely worth it.
Side note
Side note, nursing is not all bedside care. The beauty of it is that nursing is so broad that once an individual is a nurse, there are options. Options to work in various areas such as hospitals, long term care, management, education, IT, infection prevention and control and many others. It allows a lot of flexibility and options individuals to change and advance in their career as they may please.
