Transitioning Into the Canadian Healthcare Sector as an Immigrant

Transitioning Into the Canadian Healthcare Sector as an Immigrant

It is obvious that most skilled immigrants to Canada continue to experience high rates of underemployment and unemployment. A lack of recognition of foreign credentials and experience, language and communication barriers, discrimination and employers’ requirement for “Canadian experience” all contribute to this problem.
As a male immigrant from a beautiful West African country call Ghana. I immigrated to Canada with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBC) from the University of Ghana (Legon).

Transitioning

Arriving in Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario to persuade my studies in Business Administration at Algoma University. From the get-go, it dawned on me that it was going to be very difficult for me as a new immigrant. Without a permanent residence, no Canadian Business Administration experience, and must pay three times of tuition as an international student.
After seeking advice from those in previous boat, advise was given  to consider a career in Health Care Sector. Which prompted my decision to take some time out of school to work on my immigration status.

Did what was necessary to get by for example, picking up minimum wage jobs. In other to persuade a career in Nursing I had to go back to High School to obtain an Ontario High School Diploma, went to College to obtain a Diploma in Registered Practical Nursing.

Working as a Registered Nurse for a few years has been a wonderful experience and rewarding as well. This influenced my decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Base on the global statistics of a shortage of nurses, more men in nursing are critical to meet predicted global shortages in the nursing workforce and to promote gender equality in the profession. Nursing is a calling therefore service to the public.

My journey as a nurse has been very challenging but never gave up on the dream and kept on pushing. This decision is one of the best. There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel even though am still in the race. Therefore, if I can make it this far,  BET anyone can do it. {Keep your head up}.
